What You’ll Need to Build a DIY Deck

Before you get started, learn about the average costs, tools, and skills you’ll need to build your deck.

Average Cost to Build a Deck

The cost to build a deck can vary depending on its size and the materials you use. A 350 square foot wooden deck may cost $6,125, while composite decking materials for a deck of the same size may cost roughly $9,625. Although composite decking initially costs more, its longevity and resistance to mold, mildew, stains and fading means it requires less upkeep that homeowners recoup their investment over the lifetime of the deck. While these figures offer a ballpark range on the cost of material, they do not take into account the time you’ll spend building your deck or the cost of labor.

Average Time to Build a Deck

Once again, the time it takes to build your deck depends on how large or elaborate it is. A simple single-level deck can take two people 1 to 3 weeks to complete, depending on their skill level. A larger, multi-level deck with stairs, built-in seating, and embedded lighting may take a few weeks longer. Smaller, lower-to-the ground decks may be a suitable project for beginner DIYers, however, more intricate decks may not be the best building project for those with beginner or more intermediate-level skills. If you lack the skills -- or patience -- to build a deck yourself, hiring a professional may be in your best interest.
