It is easier to plan the arrangement of the hardware and fastener attachments for the ledger board using a pencil while it is on the ground than afterwards while you are standing on a ladder. You will want to use a tape measurer to layout the positions for where the joists, hangers, and ledger fasteners will be placed to make sure there will not be any overlap.
Joists and their hangers need a flat surface to mount to. The fasteners used to attach the ledger board to the house will stick out and can interfere if they are to be set in the same location. Therefore, you should plan to have the fastener locations alternate with the joist layout to allow for space in the joist cavities. You will need to mark the locations of two ½” lag bolts or equivalent approved fasteners every 16” O.C. alternating top and bottom along the ledger board with joist hanger applications skipping these raised sections in their own respective pattern (usually also 16” O.C). You can trace the outlines of the joist hangers in there correct locations.
Note that all 2x joists have a slight variation in width. Do not nail your hangers in place until you set the joists square. You will want the tops of the joists to be even. To accomplish this you will need to adjust the bottoms of the joists and the hanger positions to accomplish this |
